Gallant 53

Van de Stadt designed sloop. El Galante one was built at Southern Ocean Ship Yard Limited by Tylers in 1973. Production number 19 (of 22). To many E.G. Van de Stadt's Gallant 53 design is till one of the most attractive ever conceived. Built by Southern Ocean Shipyard in England to Lloyds 100A1 from 1967 to the mid 70's they soon gained a reputation for their stunning looks, bullet proof construction, superb motion in a seaway and the ease that they can be handled by minimum crew.

All GRP construction with hardwood and Marine ply interior to 100 A1 Lloyd’s Classification and inspection.


Hull Unit
Trough high strength to weight ratio, maintenance free, one piece moulding of glass fibre reinforced polyester, including keel (internal lead ballast).
 Standard scantlings and specification in excess of Lloyds 100A1 requirements. Stringers etc. moulded in situ and integral with hull.

Gel Coat Treatment

A full Hempel's gelcoat treatment. Full sanding, 4 coats Hempel's gel coat epoxy, paint 2x fine fillers, 1 x primer, 1 x antifouling Hempel's Hard racing (2005). Extended repair of treatment (2022) (see pictures on the homepage). The decks, superstructure and cockpit do need painting (ongoing).

Deck Unit
One piece moulding of glassfibre reinforced polyester.


Deck side, fore and after decks
Provided with good non-slip surfaces, built-in king planks and reinforced in way of cleats, chain pirates etc. All necessary glassfibre beams and carlins being bonded and integral with deck together with overall foam insulation.



Cockpit
Water-tight and self draining with high coamings shaped teak sole and seat gratings, drained seats and winch handle stowage, sail and working gear lockers, wheel steering mounted on pedestal with binnacle and compass.



Superstructure
Non-slip surfaces on coach roof. Fared raised companion on after coach roof to avoid sliding hatch and resultant leaks whilst still providing remarkably easy access. Headroom 1,8 m to 2,15 m throughout.



Hull and Deck Bond (Patented Design)
Heavy glass fibre laminates replacing conventional shelf, doubled in way of chain plates, etc, bonded to deck and hull effectively producing a complete one-piece shell of immense strength.



Mouldings
Best quality E type impregnation treated woven glass in combination with chopped strand mat and highest grade of retardant resin ensuring greatly improved properties over moulding made with sprayed chopped strands of mat. Colour pigmentation of outer surface only according to Lloyd’s requirements and laminates built up with clear resin to allow thorough inspection by Lloyd’s surveyor during construction. The mouldings are laminated throughout under cover in premises approved by Lloyd’s and under temperature and humidity control.
